Welcome to the Dementia Awareness course

Dementia is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. It is a chronic progressive problem of cognition which is failure of the brain’s functions. Dementia affects people at different stages of life, affects different parts of the brain and at different speeds. It is useful for all of us to have a greater understanding of dementia, and how to support those with condition.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of dementia
  • Explain how memory and the five senses can be affected by dementia
  • Describe how to give person-centred care
  • Make modifications to better support someone with dementia

Below you will see the chapters that make up this course. You are required to complete these chapters in order. Upon completing all chapters, you will be able to return to any of them in any order to refresh your learning. At the end of the course is an assessment containing 15 questions. You must answer 12 questions correctly to pass. If you fail to answer 12 or more questions correctly, you will be given the opportunity to try again. Upon successful completion of the assessment, you will be able to access your certificate.

You do not need to complete the course in full in one sitting. If you exit a module part way through, you will be able to return to the same point when you next log in.

We all learn at different speeds, and you should allow approximately 75 minutes to complete the course. You must pass the assessment at the end of the course to receive your certificate.

When you are ready, start the first chapter.
