This course is suitable for people working in the construction industry. By the end of the course you will be able to:

Why CDM Regulations Matter

Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations were first introduced in 2007 with the intention of ensuring health and safety were incorporated in the design, construction and management of projects. They have since been updated in 2015. This course seeks to train individuals working in the construction industry on what CDM regulations are and how they help in making projects remain in compliance with legislation. It is also designed to assist in planning projects so that the correct pre-construction information is assembled and create and maintain a safe working environment at that construction site. The construction industry involves plenty of dangerous work. Despite those that work in this sector representing just 5% of the UK workforce, they also make up 31% of all workplace fatalities. In addition, tens of thousands suffer work-related illnesses or injuries every year. The regulations are intended to help reduce the risk of such injuries and fatalities on construction sites by enabling learners to understand the importance of planning and incorporating safety management in the planning and design stages of construction projects. Given the sizable risk in the industry, the CDM regulations were developed to help improve the health and safety standards of building projects in compliance with the law. Many of the dangers are a result of such issues as the use of heavy and dangerous equipment, vehicles and materials. Construction sites can also be at dangerous locations, requiring people to work at dangerous heights, while hanging from incomplete structures and worse. Not to mention that some worksites can be quite chaotic as you have multiple people carrying out multiple tasks simultaneously within a confined space. All these activities can make worksites very dangerous and prone to accidents. CDM regulations are meant to help bring this kind of situation under control by establishing health and safety protocols that when managed by the right people, ensure compliance throughout the project to its successful completion. The CDM training course accomplishes this by covering three distinct areas of study. They include:
  • Roles and responsibilities of the duty holders throughout the project
  • Key CDM documentation on the project that meets legal standards under CDM 2015
  • General safety requirements for construction sites and on-site welfare facilities
Course content will also cover such details as why the need for CDM regulations and when it is to be applied, the relationship between the CDM regulations and other health and safety laws, the client’s duties, notification requirements for the project, pre-construction information, construction phase plan, and other guidance. Learners will also need to demonstrate an understanding of the effects of poor safety management and how to maintain a safe construction site.
